Sensex spurts on rate cut hope...Metals, Banks rise

For the first time this week the main Indian stock indices showed some strength, with the NSE Nifty ending above the 5250 mark on optimism that the RBI will cut its key lending rate next week to revive growth. A weaker-than-forecast IIP print for February, coupled with a shocking downward revision in January's data sparked expectations of a rate cut by the RBI. A positive trend across global markets added fuel to the fire.

The main indices witnessed a higher opening on the back of overnight rally in the US and European markets. The Indian market remained firm throughout the session but the frontline indices were more or less rangebound. It was a buy on dip market today.

The BSE Sensex ended at 17,332, up 133 points or ~0.8% over the previous close. It had earlier touched a day’s low of 17,276 and a day’s high of 17,395. It opened at 17,276.

Sensex, Nifty scale over one-week closing highs

Amid a volatile trading session, key benchmark indices managed to edge higher on speculation that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will cut its key policy rate at its monetary policy review early next week to spur economic growth after the latest data showed that industrial production grew by lower-than-expected 4.1% in February 2012. The barometer index, BSE Sensex, and the 50-unit S&P CNX Nifty attained their highest closing level in more than one week. The Sensex jumped 133.22 points or 0.77%, off close to 63 points from the day's high and up about 56 points from the day's low. The market breadth was strong.

The Sensex has fallen 71.58 points or 0.41% so far in April 2012 (till 12 April 2012). The index has surged 1,877.70 points or 12.15% in calendar 2012 so far (till 12 April 2012). From a 52-week low of 15,135.86 on 20 December 2011, the Sensex has risen 2196.76 points or 14.51%. From a 52-week high of 19,737.33 on 13 April 2011, the Sensex has lost 2404.71 points or 12.18%.

Shaken but not stirred!

The market is like an earthquake- unpredictable, a little scary, but when the hard part is over you realize how lucky you truly are.

Thankfully, the threat of a devastating tsunami receded and the Indian market could well look at a day of recovery. A pull-back in global markets may lend support early on but the overall trend for the day will be set by the IIP data. Industrial production is expected to moderate in February from January’s 6.8% expansion. Infrastructure sector output, which accounts for ~38% of IIP, grew by 6.8% in February vs. January's 0.7% growth.

Friday will be another big day with Government scheduled to release inflation data and IT major Infosys declaring its Q4 earnings. WPI-based inflation is likely to have edged lower in March from February’s 6.95% print. Infosys has had tough time in recent quarters meeting market expectations. Its guidance for FY13 will be keenly watched.

Precious metals end marginally lower

Prices move between small gains and losses throughout the session

Bullion metal prices ended little lower on Wednesday, 11 April 2012 at Comex. Trading was tentative Wednesday morning as the market place digested news out of the Indian Ocean region, where a major earthquake occurred near Indonesia overnight. The key outside markets were bullish for the precious metals Wednesday as crude oil prices were higher and the U.S. dollar index was lower.

TCI Govt fight over Coal India

Even as Coal India Ltd (CIL) is finalising the penalty clause on the fuel supply agreements (FSAs) it has to sign next week with power producers, The Children’s Investment Fund (TCI) has again exhorted the government to raise coal prices to market levels.

TCI’s argument: the increase in profits can be ploughed back as dividends and used to subsidise coal consumers who can’t afford higher power tariffs caused by the hike in coal prices.

In the past, TCI has alleged that coal prices are being kept 70 percent lower than international benchmarks in India, severely hurting CIL’s profitability. But the government has brushed aside TCI’s concerns, saying lower coal prices mean cheaper power to consumers.
