Sensex attains 1-1/2 month high as top Indian firms pay higher advance tax
Key benchmark indices extended gains for the fifth day in a row buoyed by good initial batch of first quarter advance tax figures from frontline companies. Higher advance tax payment normally indicates higher profits for the period under review. Global cues were supportive with European markets trading firm, reversing initial losses. Asian stocks rose, extending recent gains. The BSE 30-share Sensex was up 74.66 points or 0.43%, up 163.37 points from the day's low and off 29.67 points from the day's high. The Sensex settled at its highest level in 1-1/2 months. The 50-unit S&P CNX Nifty settled at six-week high.
Crude moves up again
Healthy data pushes crude higher
Crude oil prices ended higher on Monday, 14 June 2010 at Nymex. Prices were buoyed by weak dollar and strong economic data from the euro front. Prices rose despite news that ratings agency Moody's cut Greece's debt four notches to BA1, "junk" bond status.
Market seen opening little changed
The market is likely to open on a flat note amid mixed cues from global markets. Asian markets were trading with slightly positive bias today even as US market ended lower on Monday, 14 June 2010. Moody's Investors Service slashed Greece's credit rating into junk territory, citing the risks in the euro zone/IMF rescue package for the debt-laden country. Trading in S&P CNX Nifty index futures on the Singapore stock exchange indicated that the Nifty could rise 5 points at the opening bell.

Sensex ends near day’s high…Nifty hits 5200
The Indian markets extended winning streak to the fourth straight trading session starting off the week in style. The Nifty has surged over 200 points in last four days hitting the 5200 levels in intra-day today.
"The rally was led by the IT heavyweights like Infosys, Wipro and TCS after Fitch Ratings announced that it had revised the outlook on India's Long-term local currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to Stable from Negative", says Amar Ambani Vice President Research IIFL.
Moody’s blues again!
Don't waste your time away thinkin' 'bout yesterday's blues. - Jon Bon Jovi.
Well, well, well, the bulls are Livin’ on a prayer. Just when equity markets were getting back into the groove comes another bolt from the blue. Moody’s has cut Greece's government bond ratings to junk. The Dow abandoned triple-digit gains to close lower. The euro, which regained some lost ground against the dollar, retreated from its daily highs.
European markets rallied on though as the Greek downgrade by Moody’s was announced after markets closed there. Asian markets are down, though not by a great deal.
Flat start likely on Greece rating cut

Economy rebounds, Reliance entry into telecom
Economics (April 2010 IIP: Growth rebounds): April 2010 IIP growth, at 17.6% YoY, was significantly above our estimate and consensus. More importantly, after three months of staying almost flat (or negative) MoM, IIP grew 2.4% (seasonally adjusted). This translates to an annualised growth rate of 10.8% for the three months to April 2010. The year-ago period’s low base will result in continued double-digit growth for the next few months. However, the low-base effect comes off rapidly from May 2009 onwards, as IIP grew at average 1.7% MoM (seasonally adjusted) between May 2009 and September 2009. While the pick-up in growth raises the probability of an inter-meeting rate hike by the RBI, we think it will be the inflation data rather than IIP that will be the bigger determinant of a rate hike. We continue to expect RBI to tighten policy rates by a further 100bps through the rest of FY11.
