Sensex, Nifty hit lowest level in more than a week as FIIs sell

The key benchmark indices dropped for the fourth straight day to reach their lowest closing level in more than a week as data showing sustained selling by foreign funds over the past three trading sessions weighed on the sentiment. Another reason why investors were cautious was because the central bank is seen raising key short-term interest rates by a minimum 25 basis points at a policy review early next week.

RIL, Wipro lead decline

The key benchmark indices edged lower in choppy trade, extending last two days' losses, as higher crude oil prices stoked macroeconomic worries. Wild intraday swings were witnessed during the last two hours or so of trade as traders rollover positions in the futures & options (F&O) segment ahead of the expiry of the near-month April 2011 derivatives contracts tomorrow, 28 April 2011. The market breadth was negative. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL) extended recent losses on reports the government is considering imposing penalty for the company falling short of targeted gas production at its D6 block.

Axis Bank

Axis Bank

Indian Bank

For 4QFY2011, Indian Bank reported net profit growth of 7.1% yoy to `439cr, below our estimates of `486cr mainly on account of higher tax provisioning (43.5% effective tax rate for 4QFY2011) than factored in by us. Further, improvement in asset quality over the last quarter was the key positive of the result. We recommend an Accumulate rating on the stock.

Stable margins with improving asset quality: Net advances for the bank grew marginally by 1.8% qoq and 21.1% yoy to `75,250cr, while deposits grew by 4.7% qoq and 19.9% yoy to `1,05,804cr. CASA ratio as of 4QFY2011 stood at 30.9%, down 116bp compared to 32.0% in 3QFY2011. Reported NIM for 4QFY2011 stood at 3.86%, 2bp higher than 3.84% in 3QFY2011. During the quarter, non-interest income grew by 9.2% qoq (down 7.3% yoy) to `272cr. The bank’s asset quality improved during the quarter, with gross and net NPAs in absolute terms declining by 1.6% qoq and 4.8% qoq, respectively. Gross and net NPA ratios of the bank improved marginally by 4bp each to 0.98% and 0.53%, respectively, with a provision coverage ratio of 84.3% including write-offs.

Outlook and valuation: The bank’s relatively higher rural and semi-urban presence has enabled it to maintain reasonable cost of funds, resulting in more resilient NIMs than other mid-size PSU banks. At the CMP, the stock is trading at 5.2x FY2013E EPS of `47.1 and 1.0x FY2013E ABV of `256.5, which is below our target multiple of 1.1x FY2013 ABV. Hence, we recommend an Accumulate rating on the stock with a target price of `269, implying a 9.0% upside from current levels.

Sensex survives steep slide...Ends slightly down

The BSE Sensex closed at 19,545, down 39 points over the previous close.

The Indian market managed to escape a broad selloff to close marginally in the red on Tuesday, as investors welcomed better-than-expected results from cement majors ACC and UltraTech and European equities recovered.

Traded volume and turnover were substantially higher from the previous session, as traders started adjusting positions ahead of the F&O expiry on Thursday. However, market breadth was negative throughout the day.

Gains at start!

By persisting in your path, though you forfeit the little, you gain the great. - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Tuesday’s smart turnaround is likely to spill over into today’s session owing to robust global cues. US stocks rallied, spurred by strong earnings from top names such as Ford, UPS and 3M. A strong consumer confidence report added fuel to the fire. European equities too gained after UPS reported encouraging inflows from wealthy clients. Asian stocks are mostly higher, led by Japan.

We expect a positive opening for Indian indices. The focus will continue to be on corporate results. Dabur, Exide, Patni, UB and Wipro are among the leading companies declaring quarterly numbers today.

Senses drifts lower in insipid session...RIL slips

Global cues too were rather indecisive with the European markets shut for the extended Easter holidays.

The Indian market closed virtually unchanged on Monday at the end of a highly listless session, with the key equity benchmarks trading in a narrow range.

The undertone was more or less subdued right from the start and the market never really looked like accelerating the tempo. Investors chose to remain on the sidelines ahead of the Fed policy meet and the F&O expiry later in the week.

Lack of excitement

When I'm inspired, I get excited because I can't wait to see what I'll come up with next. - Dolly Parton.

Inspiration and excitement seem to have taken a break these days and investors will hope to shake off the weariness. But with global cues being uncertain, the start may once again be tepid. We do not rule out some pick-up in momentum as the day progresses. Much will hinge on how trading in Asia and Europe unfolds. As usual, companies due to announce earnings will remain in the spotlight.

Market may fall on weak Asian stocks

The market may edge lower in early trade tracking weak Asian stocks. Trading of S&P CNX Nifty futures on the Singapore stock exchange indicates a fall of 3.50 points at the opening bell.

Among corporate news, Reliance Infrastructure said after market hours on Monday that it bought back 1 lakh shares on Monday under the buyback program. It added it so far bought back 8 lakh shares under the buyback program. The company has announced buyback of shares for an aggregate amount of upto Rs 1000 crore.

Nifty ends above 5850 despite rising inflation

The BSE Sensex ended at 19,602 adding 131 points. While, NSE Nifty gained by 33 points to close at 5,884.

The Indian markets extended its winning streak to third straight trading session on Thursday ending a truncated week on a positive note. Markets started off with in the green amid gains in the equity markets across the globe. However, key indices saw a sharp decline after the weekly inflation data dampened the sentiments.
The annual rate of inflation in the food space rose in the second week of April but stayed below the double digit mark for the fourth straight week. India’s food inflation increased to 8.74% in the week ended April 9 from 8.28% in the previous week.

Soft start, firmness ahead

Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don't fight them. Just find a different way to stand. - Oprah Winfrey.

After the long Easter weekend, world markets will try to remain resurrected despite a series of headwinds. As has been the case lately, earnings will continue to dominate the headlines for a few more days. Talking of India, the disappointment from index bellwether Reliance could put a lid on gains at least in the early trade. The start could be subdued but we could see some positive action later in the day.

Precious metals continue to glitter

Gold and silver rise for seventh straight day

Precious metal prices witnessed new highs and they ended substantially higher once again on Thursday, 21 April 2011 at Comex. It was seventh consecutive day of straight gains for the bullions. Prices rose riding on the back of weak dollar and on inflation concerns as investors sought to bullions as a safer investment as debt problems continue to haunt the developed countries. Thursday was the last trading day of the week as market was closed on Friday, 22 April because of Good Friday holiday.

Crude ends modestly higher

Weak dollar, Mid East tension and inventory data push up prices

Crude oil prices ended modestly higher on Thursday, 21 April 2011. Weekly inventory data from the energy department earlier during the week coupled with weak dollar pushed crude prices higher on Thursday. Mixed economic data also pushed up prices. Ongoing supply fears surrounding unresolved geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and, most recently, Nigeria also impacted prices.

RIL's lower than expected Q4 result may weigh on investor sentiment
