Sensex ends below 20,000 mark; Hindalco, Tata Steel drop


Indian equities continued to drop for the second day on Thursday. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex declined 32.92 points or 0.16% at 19,982.88 with 20 components registering drop. while the broad based NSE Nifty closed flat with a decline of 4.40 points or 0.07%, at 5,980 with 35 components posting drop.



Sensex Movers

Larsen & Toubro contributed fall of 14.99 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Steel (8.48 points), Tata Consultancy Services (7.37 points), Tata Motors (7.13 points) and Hindalco Industries (6.86 points).

However, Infosys Technologies contributed rise of 15.58 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (9.8 points), NTPC (6.19 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (4.6 points) and H D F C Bank (4.23 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were NTPC (1.50%), Sterlite Industries (India) (0.95%), Infosys Technologies (0.77%), H D F C Bank (0.41%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (0.40%), and Jindal Steel & Power (0.32%).

On the other hand, Hindalco Industries (1.81%), Tata Steel (1.61%), D L F (1.26%), Tata Motors (1.23%), Larsen & Toubro (1.09%), and Hero Honda Motors (1.02%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Midcap index was at 7608.33 down by 17.32 points or by 0.23%.
The major losers were Alstom Projects India (2.61%), Allahabad Bank (0.32%), Alfa-Laval (India) (0.32%), Ackruti City (0.25%) and A I A Engineering (0.01%).

The BSE Smallcap index was at 9324.54 down by 12.57 points or by 0.13%.
The major losers were Action Construction Equipment (2.15%), Abhishek Industries (2.1%), Reliance MediaWorks (0.42%), Aarti Industries (0.42%) and Advanta India (0.04%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Consumer Durables index was at 5,998.37, down by 67.15 points or by 1.11%. The major losers were Rajesh Exports (2.65%), Titan Industries (1.7%), Videocon Industries (1.45%), Blue Star (0.36%) and Whirlpool Of India (0.21%).

The Metal index was at 17,040.92, down by 167.09 points or by 0.97%. The major losers were JSW Steel (3.67%), Hindalco Industries (1.81%), Bhushan Steel (1.11%), National Aluminium Company (0.98%) and Hindustan Zinc (0.2%).

The Realty index was at 2,743.87, down by 24.76 points or by 0.89%. The major losers were Indiabulls Real Estate (2.35%), Godrej Properties (1.72%), D L F (1.26%), Anant Raj Industries (1.25%) and Ackruti City (0.25%).

On the other hand, the HC index was at 6,514.64, up by 44.85 points or by 0.69%. The major gainers were Divis Laboratories (2.32%), Glenmark Pharmaceutical (0.47%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.39%), Dr Reddy`S Laboratories (0.27%) and Ipca Laboratories (0.09%).

Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 1,375 advances against 1,536 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 7,043.92 million. It was followed by Moil (Rs. 1,124.34 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 892.18 million) and Jindal Poly Films (Rs. 702.06 million).

The volume chart was led by A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services with trades of over 21.42 million shares. It was followed by Ispat Industries (18.82 million), Cals Refineries (13.62 million) and Sanraa Media (7.91 million).

New Listing

Shares of A2Z Maintenance & Engineering got listed at the bourses today. The shares of the company settled at Rs 328.15, a discount of 17.96%, against the issue price of Rs 400 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), after touching a low of Rs 318.60. It got listed at Rs 500, a premium of 25% as against its issue price of Rs 400 on the NSE.
