Sensex spurts anew...Nifty ends above 6k

The bulls continued their effort to gradually make their way back into the market following the recent reversals, with the two key stock indices piercing key psychological barriers.

Once again, buying was seen across the board with the broader market indices outperforming the frontline counters.

Real Estate, Metals, IT, Banking and Oil & Gas stocks drove the advance today while Auto, Capital Goods and Power shares were rather subdued.

Today's gains could partly be attributed to the bounce back in world equities amid reports that the ECB is likely to swing into action to stem the deepening sovereign debt crisis in the eurozone. The euro recovered some of the lost ground against the dollar ahead of the all-important ECB policy meeting on Thursday.

US stocks rallied smartly overnight on the back of a string of positive economic reports. Asian markets too extended this week's gains, with Japan, South Korea and Australia pacing the rally.

The fact that the food inflation and fuel inflation slipped below the 10% mark in the third week of November also supported the market today. On Tuesday, the Government data showed that India's Q2 GDP grew by an impressive 8.9%.

Coming back to the Indian market, the BSE Sensex closed at 19,992, up 142 points or 0.7% over the previous close. It had earlier touched a day's peak of 20,084 and a day's low of 19,917 after opening at 20,038.

The NSE Nifty shut shop 50 points higher at 6,011 after hitting a day's high of 6,029 and a day's low of 5,980. It opened at 6,023.

The BSE Small-Cap index and the BSE Mid-Cap index rose about 1% each.

The market breadth was pretty positive on the BSE with 1,880 shares climbing and 1,034 shares falling.

Hero Honda, NTPC, M&M, Bharti Airtel, JP Associate, Tata Power, L&T, ITC, Cipla, HUL, Maruti Suzuki, BPCL, GAIL and Siemens were among the laggards in the Sensex and the Nifty.
