Sensex ends flat; RCom, Hindalco, ONGC fall


Indian equities settled flat on Monday with negative biased. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 19.51 or 0.11% at 17,441.44, while the broad based NSE Nifty closed flat with a decline of 1.20 points or 0.02%, at 5,235.90.



Oil & Natural Gas Corporation contributed fall of 10.38 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Bharat Heavy Electricals (6.69 points), Reliance Communications (5.07 points), NTPC (4.75 points) and Hindalco Industries (4.3 points).

However, Infosys Technologies contributed rise of 8.74 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Housing Development Finance Corporation (7.84 points), Mahindra & Mahindra (4.45 points), Bharti Airtel (3.65 points) and State Bank Of India (2.69 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Mahindra & Mahindra (1.33%), Wipro (0.89%), Bharti Airtel (0.81%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (0.81%), Infosys Technologies (0.51%), and ACC (0.43%).

On the other hand, Reliance Communications (2.88%), Hindalco Industries (1.73%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.45%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.27%), Hindustan Unilever (1.13%), and NTPC (1.11%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.29% and 0.32% respectively.

The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allcargo Global Logistics (1.73%), Allahabad Bank (0.78%), Apollo Tyres (0.54%), Andhra Bank (0.5%) and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.25%).

The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Adhunik Metaliks (3.83%), Aarti Industries (2.83%), Advanta India (0.9%), INEOS ABS (India) (0.76%) and Action Construction Equipment (0.3%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Oil & Gas index was at 10,631.62, down by 84.9 points or by 0.79%. The major losers were Aban Offshore (2.54%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (1.92%), Essar Oil (1.5%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (1.06%) and Cairn India (0.03%).

The Metal index was at 14,324.92, down by 57.21 points or by 0.4%. The major losers were Hindalco Industries (1.73%), National Aluminium Company (0.74%), NMDC (0.55%), Sterlite Industries (India) (0.22%) and JSW Steel (0.01%).

The PSU index was at 9,409.91, down by 35.24 points or by 0.37%. The major losers were Bank Of Maharashtra(1.71%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.27%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (1.06%), BEML (1.05%) and Bank Of Baroda (0.37%).

On the other hand, the HC index was at 5,738.29, up by 30.37 points or by 0.53%. The major gainers were Aurobindo Pharma (1.1%), Biocon (0.54%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.25%), Cadila Healthcare (0.16%) and Cipla (0.13%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,641 advances against 1,265 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Reliance Power topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,995.02 million. It was followed by Reliance Natural Resources (Rs. 864.17 million), Persistent Systems (Rs. 605.53 million) and V I P Industries (Rs. 413.82 million).

The volume chart was led by Reliance Natural Resources with trades of over 18.66 million shares. It was followed by Reliance Power (11.00 million), I F C I (3.33 million) and Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision (3.30 million).
