US stocks witness mixed finish on Friday as Dow pares earlier gains


Indices suffer substantial weekly losses as Eurozone's troubles hang over investors' heads

US stocks ended with substantial losses for the week that ended on Friday, 16 December 2011. The first three sessions of the week saw stocks decline. A lack of progress by Europe's leaders in restoring economic and financial conditions in both the core and periphery of the continent often hung over the minds of many traders. Those themes also implicated the euro; it dropped to an 11-month low during the middle of the week before making a modest recovery in the later half of the week.

Modest weekly gains for US stocks


Job report checks in better than expected

US stocks ended higher for the week that ended on Friday, 07 October 2011. Though stocks kicked off the week on a slow note, middle of the week saw stocks climb sharply for the broad market's best back-to-back performance in more than a month. A better tan expected job report gave a nice final push to stocks at the end of the week and the same ended with modest gains.

For the week, that ended on Friday, 07 October 2011, Dow ended higher by 189.74 points or 1.7% to 11,103.12. The Nasdaq gained 63.95 points or 2.6% to 2,479.35 and the S&P 500 gained 24.04 points or 2.1% to 1,155.46.

US stocks down


US stock index futures fell sharply on Monday as fears of a credit rating downgrade of French banks and the lack of a solution to Greece's debt problem heightened concerns about the euro zone's debt crisis.

France's top banks are bracing themselves for a likely credit rating downgrade from Moody's, sources close to the situation said on Saturday, further complicating their efforts to assure investors they are riding out the tensions in funding markets.

Stocks register mild weekly losses

Aggressive selling on Friday following a disappointing job report extended a slide that started a day before on Thursday. Volatile US stocks once again registered substantial losses for the week that ended on Friday, 19 August 2011. Stocks kicked off the week on a strong note. But macro economic data during the week at home front and also globally pointed out to another spell of recessionary trends that might engulf the US and global economy soon. Uncertainty regarding the state of Europe pressured stocks, especially financials. Treasuries rallied, with the 10-year yield hitting a record low. Gold prices rallied as the precious metal broke through another all-time nominal high.

Fear, returns


U.S. stocks fell sharply Wednesday, nearly wiping out the previous session's huge rally, as fears about Europe's ongoing debt crisis resurfaced.

The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) was down 380 points, or 3.4%, in the afternoon. Earlier, the index fell as much as 468 points.

US Stocks plunge again


U.S. stock futures fell Wednesday as markets remain shaky in what has been a volatile week.


The Dow Jones industrial average surged on Tuesday to its biggest gain since 2009 after the Federal Reserve pledged to keep its key interest rate at nearly zero into 2013. The central bank also said it considered other "policy tools" to spur economic growth. Some investors took that to mean that more stimulus may be coming.

US Stocks plunge on economy concerns


The stock market fell sharply Tuesday because investors have grown increasingly worried about the economy.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 33 points, or 2.6 percent, and is now down 0.3 percent for the year. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 266 points, or 2.2 percent, and is now up just 2.5 percent for the year.

US stocks finished strongly higher on Wednesday, 16 February 2011. It was mainly better than expected earning and economic reports that helped stocks bounce back after incurring losses for two straight days. The dollar remained strong initially but pared its gains in the later part. Latest minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee meet also boosted stocks.

Friday's losses take US stocks lower for the week


Fourth quarter GDP reading comes below expectations

US stocks ended with modest losses for the week that ended on Friday, 28 January 2011. Stocks would have eked out some gains for the week but for the triple digit losses that it incurred on the last trading day of the week. Earning reports dominated the week and drove stocks higher during the course of the week. But a couple of economic reports, mainly in the later part of the week took stocks lower on Friday. Stocks slipped on the final day of trading as fourth quarter GDP reading failed to meet expectations.
